The seaside filming location of Greek TV drama Maestro, streamed worldwide on Netflix under the title Maestro in Blue, was voted best Instagrammable Greek destination of 2024 by UK travellers, outshining co-nominees Milos and Meteora.

The three-season social-romantic series that gained international acclaim was filmed on the tiny remote island of Paxos in the Ionian Sea, near Corfu, turning the spotlight on this little-known paradisical destination.

The award was announced during the glamorous ceremony in London for the Greek Travel Awards 2024, presented by British philhellene photographer, food writer and reality TV show Next Top Model judge, Jonaphan Phang.

Best Greek thematic travel destinations for 2024

The Greek Travel Awards event, now in its third year, promotes year-round thematic travel to Greek destinations.

Besides Best Instagrammable Destination, the awards comprised another nine categories for thematic tourism in Greece as voted by British travellers through booking platforms Ice Lolly and Travel Supermarket.

This multi-faceted presentation of Greek tourism through the Greek Travel Awards UK is not only a useful barometer for tourism professionals that highlights the preferences of foreign travelers in Greece, but also a powerful means for promoting new Greek destinations to repeat visitors looking for new experiences in a country they already know and love.

Unsurprisingly, three of the awards for 2024 went to major Greek cities Athens and Thessaloniki, which have seen tourist arrivals constantly rising in recent years.

The Greek capital won Best City Break and Best Culture Destination, beating Thessaloniki and Corfu in the first category and Crete and Olympia in the second.

Thessaloniki, on the other hand, was voted best Greek destination for gastronomy, leaving behind the island of Lesvos and the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece.

The area of Halkidiki, in close proximity to the city of Thessaloniki, won Most Emerging Destination against Sifnos and Karpathos islands, but lost the Best Sailing Destination award to nearby Skiathos. The island of Patmos on the Dodecanese was also nominated as a favorite for sailing.

Tourist destinations for every taste

The Greek Mountain of Gods, Mount Olympus, was voted as the Best Greek Adventure Destination for 2024 by UK voters, who showed their preference over two other Greek adventure destinations – Epirus’ Zagoria mountain region and climbers’ paradise Kalymnos island on the Dodecanese.

When it comes to walking, British travelers voted the island of Kythnos as the best Greek destination of the year in this category. The island of Andros in the Cyclades and Tzoumerka mountain range in Epirus were also nominated.

On the opposite side, luxury lovers chose the tiny Greek island of Antiparos – a Hollywood stars’ favorite – as Best Luxury Destination over the islands of Kea and Folegandros.

The cycladic island of Naxos was named Best Sustainable Destination, overtaking Chios and Astypalaia.

Speaking of sustainability, the trophies presented to the winners of the Greek Travel Awards UK 2024 were created by acclaimed Greek sustainable material brand, Phee.

The Awards’ organizer, the Greek National Tourism Organization UK & Ireland, was itself awarded as best tourism organization for the UK market at the 2024 TTG Travel Industry Awards, in recognition of its innovative promotional actions.
